Where Does PR Fit?
I am teaching a class this semester called "Contemporary Issues in Journalism." Like many schools, public relations is housed at my university under journalism. While it makes sense, I wonder how to reach my public relations students in broad journalism classes such as this. In formulating the syllabus it is definitely heavy on topics such as media ownership, journalism and democracy and how digital changes affect the profession. We also talk about the relationship between journalism and public relations, but that's like one class. I'm struggling with how to integrate my PR students into the curriculum so it doesn't seem like the course isn't relevant to them at all. For one of my assignments I've asked them to talk about the future of journalism and how it will specifically affect their chosen emphasis (some students are broadcast and photo emphases too). Does anyone have any experience with integrating PR students and subjects into general journalism classes?
